The Queens of Burlesque in NYC, March 11, 2010

Image
I saw a burlesque show produced by the Pontani Sisters and hosted by Murray Hill at the Slipper Room in 2002, when the current burlesque scene was just a sparkle in all our eyes. Now it's a worldwide phenomenon producing some of the most spectacular performers burlesque has ever known, and Murray and Angie brought together a group of those fabulous performers in New York City, where burlesque striptease once flourished, was outlawed, and has bloomed all over again. The Queens of Burlesque show on March 11 was held at Le Poisson Rouge, a gorgeous red and black venue with great sightlines. Featuring Murray and Angie as well as Immodesty Blaize , Dirty Martini , Michelle L’amour , Julie Atlas Muz , Miss Indigo Blue , Perle Noire and Catherine D’Lish , it was properly touted as the burlesque show not to miss. All of the performers were award-winners in the Exotic World/Burlesque Hall of Fame pageants, and they proved that these awards go to the most glamourous, charismatic, dedicated...

Inspiration and Execution: Tribute Numbers in Burlesque

Image
Every year at The Burlesque Hall of Fame Striptease Reunion , several performers bring numbers constructed to tribute their favorite superstars of classic burlesque. Sometimes they are recreations, sometimes they are simply inspired by and include elements of movement, costuming, and/or lore associated with those performers. This year I'm tributing Sherry Britton, for which I have the honor of having had her guidance and suggestions before she passed away. As the BHOF Weekend nears (or I should say, zooms in, as I'm feeling a bit behind in my preparations!), I want to make note of some of the loveliest tributes I've seen, so I've asked the performers who did them to make some comments on the experiences they had with their numbers. This is the first of two or three posts I'll make about tribute numbers. Above: BOB and Ruby at the New York Burlesque Festival. Photo by Kitty Kowalski. Video Review: Beginning Fan Dance with Michelle L'Amour

Image
Michelle L'Amour performed a landmark tribute to Sally Rand at The Burlesque Hall of Fame Striptease Reunion in Las Vegas in 2007. Who wouldn't want to learn fan dance techniques from Michelle? She begins with a recommendation of types of fans to use, then clearly explains the theatrical definition of a reveal, and demonstrates how to hold the fans and how to think of them as an extension of yourself and as a costume. She breaks down a graceful walk and sprinkles the video with dos and don'ts that apply to any kind of dance performance. She talks about staging and what the audience can see as well as showing fan movement techniques. Michelle's onstage charm translates beautifully into teaching. She has confidence and warmth as a teacher, and her voice is as easy on the ear as her body is on the eye (her posterior is known as "The Ass that Goes Pow!" for good reason). Technically, the video is well-staged, with gorgeous red and black tones, and ...

Michelle L'Amour In Newer News...

'With sights seriously set on a series, the pilot for "L'Originale Burlesque" is in the works and is fixed on bringing back the glitz and glamour of the 1940s burlesque world, both celebrating and ritualizing the beauty and grace of the female form. Boasting elaborate, ostentatious costumes, intricate and period-specific dance techniques, as well as the art of the striptease itself, Breakout's provocative new series promises to entice and indulge. 'Director Shawn Foster (The Sun and Sugarcult music videos) is at the helm of this extraordinary little jewel starring the lovely and fiercely exotic Chicago burlesque queen Michelle L'Amour, who has been recently featured on "America's Got Talent." L'Amour has also been seen on Showtime's "Sexual Healing," as well as being featured in Women's Health, NY Post and Time out Chicago.' http://biz.yahoo.com/iw/070710/0276337.html Conveniently, Michelle is also teaching a cl...
